Foos for Families event raises money for local families

On Sunday, March 7, the Western Illinois University Recreation, Park and Tourism Administration Department hosted their annual “Foos for Families” event in conjunction with the Macomb Park District and the Center for Youth and Family Solutions (CYFS). 

In a year where most events have had to adjust and change due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was debatable whether or not “Foos for Families” would be able to take place. Rather than the typical standalone human foosball tournament, this year’s event got creative to allow for social distancing in accordance with COVID-19 guidelines. Instead of a two-part event, the event took place in two separate parts: a scavenger hunt and the usual human foosball tournament.

While the event is usually open to as many teams are interested in participating, this year the limit was set at 10 teams. Four teams ended up participating: two teams from Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and two teams from the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program. Sigma Alpha Epsilon Team Four secured the most shots on goal, earning the title of first place. All participants were required to wear masks for the duration of the event and were encouraged to social distance. The cost to participate in the event was $25 per team. 

The first part of the event was an Amazing-Race style scavenger hunt all around Macomb. Each of the four teams participating was assigned a location to get their first envelope containing a clue, which would then lead them to their next clue and so on. Each clue the team was able to solve earned them additional shots on goal during the second phase of the event. The first part of the event began at 2 p.m. and ended at 3:30 p.m.

The second part of the event was the traditional human foosball tournament. Each team that participated in the event started with five shots on goal and had the opportunity during the scavenger hunt portion of the event to gain shots on goal through solving clues. While the aforementioned portion took place throughout Macomb, the foosball tournament took place inside the Campus Recreation Center. Teams were each assigned a time slot between 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. The winner of “Foos for Families” was determined by which team earned the most shots on goal. 

All proceeds from the event were donated to the Center for Youth and Family Solutions. In addition to funds, the event served as a chance for people in the community to learn more about the organization and the needs of local families. The event raised money for school supplies, hygiene products, fuel cards and more for local children and families. In addition to registration costs, a raffle also took place during the event and all proceeds went to CYFS.
