A late-night fire at the Jefferson House, located at 900 E. Jefferson St., has temporarily displaced 20 residents.

According to Macomb Fire Chief Andy Taylor, the Macomb Fire Department responded to a call shortly before 1 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 21. It was a “room and contents fire” which started in the living room of apartment 605, located on the sixth floor of the north wing. According to Taylor, the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it started in a love seat.

Due to extensive smoke and water damage to other apartments, 20 residents were relocated to the Comfort Inn for the next seven to 13 days while crews work to repair the damage.

There were no reported injuries to residents or to firefighters. Firefighters did save a cat from the apartment where the fire originated.

Firefighters were on scene until 3 a.m.
