Winds slide to bottom of barrel

The Westerwinds basketball team was overshadowed by Northeastern Illinois University last night after suffering an 83-59 defeat. The ‘Winds remained fairly competitive throughout the majority of the game with the support of seniors Deirdre LaFrance, Nikka Nohl and freshman Nicole LaVan.

LaVan began the first half with a layup at the 19 minute, 12 second mark. LaVan also contributed three more layups, a jumper, three free throws and two assists en route to scoring 13 points for the evening.

LaFrance led the team in scoring by garnering four layups, 3 three-pointers, a jumper and an assist en route to scoring 19 total points.

Nohl contributed the second highest point total for the ‘Winds with 14 which included five layups and four free throws.

“I thought we had an opportunity in the first half that we really needed to take advantage of … then ( in the second half) we let it wither away,” head coach Regina Miller said. “I was concerned that we as a team didn’t play as hard as we needed to .”

The ‘Winds excelled through a competitive first half by struggling to maintain a lead against NEIU en route to topping off the first half 27-26. Despite the ‘Winds effort to maintain a 35- 30 lead at the 16:34 mark in the second half, they were unable to block NEIU from exploding past them in the remaining 15 minutes of the game.

The Westerwinds will now look ahead to their next competition this Saturday against Chicago State University in Western Hall at 3 p.m.
